Travelling to Heptonstall

Home

The map  shows where Heptonstall is in relation to Hebden Bridge and the fast life in the bottom of the valley, along the busy A646.

By road:

Approaching from the West (Manchester, Liverpool, Todmorden):

Proceed Eastwards along the A646, passing Mytholm church on the left, mounting a small hill with traffic lights at the top by the Fox and Goose, and a left turn signed to Heptonstall. The hill is quite steep. Follow the sign giving a fork to the left to Heptonstall village after about half a mile. This is the steepest part.

Approaching from the East (Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, Mytholmroyd):

Proceed Westwards along the A646, through Hebden Bridge town centre, then climbing a small hill with traffic lights at the top. There is a sign indicating Heptonstall straight on via the turning circle. Carry straight on through the traffic lights, past Mytholm Church on the right, and enter the turning circle on the left. Turn right into the A646 and Approach From the West (see above).

Entering Heptonstall

Heptonstall is quite small enough to walk round, but first you need to park your car.
Where to park?
Just before you enter the village is a left turn, with a Parking notice. Follow this road round, keeping left, until you come to the Heptonstall Bowling and Social Club. Their car park is for public use from 8am to 8pm but during the Festival the committee have given permission for their car park to be used for the duration of the concerts. The old village is a conservation area and street parking is not allowed.

If you were not to turn left as above you would see a Parking notice signed to the right, down a narrow alley. This is a 24 hour car park, but is often over-subscribed.

Street parking is permitted on Longfield and Southfield among the new houses, but please park carefully as this is a bus route.

Where is the Festival?
You will soon see the Church tower. Make your way towards that. There are around 120 ways to get to this, all obvious.

By bus:

There is a good bus service between Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall. Services "E - MetroConnect Hebden Bridge - Hebden Bridge - Heptonstall - Blackshaw Head", or the 591 are the one you need. The latest timetables may be found here .  The link for Service "E" is near the top of the main pane.

Buses go from Hebden Bridge station every hour, but a convenient pickup point is on the main road by the Memorial Gardens, next to the Picture House, where buses are two every hour during the day. The service tails off at night, so please check the latest timetable!

Ask the driver for "Heptonstall", and ring the bell when the bus hits the cobbles.

Adobe reader will let you read the timetable. If you don't have it, you can download it here.

By water:

The Rochdale canal runs through Hebden Bridge and is fully navigable, certainly for 7 foot wide craft. It is a wonderful way to travel. You will be dependent on buses up to Heptonstall.
